As a collaboration between Japanese traditional lacquerware artist Wajima Kirimoto and Nihon Shokubai, a chemical manufacturing company based in Osaka, we developed “Yo-Kou”, a lighted lacquerware. It was a production made in the objective of enhancing Japanese craftsmanship and new technology.

Starting with Kirimoto saying: “I want to be able to see the moon’s light in my wares.”, the project was brought to Nihon Shokubai to start development. Using 0.07mm thick organic EL Film, the project was ultimately developed after multiple trial and error. The result is a product that “pushes the boundaries of thinness”, developed under with the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship.

石川・輪島市にある漆器工房輪島キリモトと大阪市に本社をおく化学品製造企業の日本触媒が共同で、光る漆塗り「Yo-Kou」を開発。伝統工芸と最新テクノロジーが融合し、それぞれをアップデートするという試みをプロデュースしました。

きっかけとなったのは、輪島キリモトから「杯の中に月の光が反射する作品を作りたい」という相談を受けたこと。その話を日本触媒へ持ち寄り開発を開始。0.07ミリの有機ELフィルムを使用し、試行錯誤を繰り返しアイデアを実現させました。両者に共通した「薄さを極める」という匠の精神により、現代に新たな価値を提案する作品となっています。
